Lastly here are two thrillers/fantasy audio books to enjoy on your holiday travels by train, plane and automobile.

Audio Book Gifts Come in Many Varieties

Audio book gifts are great for many people on you holiday shopping list.  You can give them in a variety of ways that might not be obvious.  As the owner of a downloadable audio book store my choice is to burn audio books onto CD with custom covers and give them as physical gifts but this is not the only option for you.  You can even incorporate an audio book with your gift of a digital player like an IPod.  With an IPod you can go even further by buying an ITunes gift certificate that the person can use to buy their own audio books through the ITunes store.  You can buy audio book gift memberships at places like BooksFree or Audible.

Audio book gifts can be great for many people on your list.  Here are some examples of how I incorporate audio books into my holiday gift giving.

My husband is a busy business person who doesn’t have much time to read.  He also isn’t really that much of a techie, meaning that any downloading of books or music is usually left up to me.  His interests range from sports and business to current affairs.  In order to make things easy for him I will buy him some downloadable books and burn them to CD in a format that he can play in his car while commuting to work or to listen to while traveling for work.  Audio book gifts are great for business people and heavy commuters because they can listen to these books during “dead” time and still be able to either educate themselves on the latest business theories or listen to a biography for someone they admire.

For my children I will probably buy some physical books that are accompanied by an audio book, you can usually find these at the major retail book stores.  This is great fun for them and at ages 6 and 4 continue to build their vocabulary and foster their love of reading.  I might also burn some downloadable audio books to listen to at night to give myself a break now and then.

For my older nieces that are both audio book listeners and avid music listeners I will probably buy an ITunes gift certificate so they have the option of buying either books or music.  You can easiIy buy these online and print them out to put in a card.  I can do this for my sisters as well who are good with computers.  One of my sisters loves languages and audio books are great for learning a new language.  So far she has learned Japanese and some Korean, maybe I will add to her Learn Korean Language audio books.

Audio book gifts are also great for older people like my parents and in-laws.  All of mine are old enough that reading actual books is becoming a little challenging.  Depending on how techie they are you can buy them memberships that allow them to do the downloading themselves or you can do what I do.  I buy, download and burn them to CD and wrap them.  The tricky part with doing all of this stuff yourself is to make sure you know the person’s interests, you may even get them to tell you what book they have been dieing to read.

So to wrap up here’s a list of ways to give audio book gifts:

  1. Download and burn to CD, package them and give them as a physical gift.
  2. Download them onto a new digital/mp3 player that you buy as a gift.  If you choose the IPod buy an ITunes gift certificate to add both audio books and music to your gift.
  3. Buy audio book gift memberships at places like Audible, Booksfree or Simply Audiobooks

So as you can see audio book gifts are good for more than stocking stuffers.

Biographies in Audio Book Format : A Guilty Pleasure

Biographies in audio book format provide us with an easy way to participate in what some of us would consider a guilty pleasure.  A biography is the account of someone’s life story.  It can be an autobiography that is written by the person who is the subject or it can be written by someone else.  They can be authorized or unauthorized by the subject.  Why is it a guilty pleasure?  The most popular biography books are those written on actors, actresses, singers and musicians.  It is a vicarious look into the lives of people that have fascinated us.

I know of people whose sole reading is reading biographies on famous people like Elvis Presley, Natalie Wood and Hilary Clinton.  There is a comforting feeling when listening to biographies in audio book format, since it is like being told about an interesting family relative or ancestor but some people consider some biographical works to be borderline or straight tabloid works.  I must confess that though I do not buy them I tend to flip through the tabloids in the checkout line of the supermarket.

Why this fascination with voyeurism?  Now mind you I don’t mean the more tawdry sense of voyeurism but the other one that is defined by MSN Encarta as "the persistent observer of misery or scandal".  The fascination with Elvis Presley after 30 years is a great example of that.  He led a tragic life where we all felt that he had so much more left to give.  We hope that in reading or listening to his story we will somehow make sense of his tragic death.  The same is the case for Natalie Wood.

What biographies in audio book format provide us is the ability to listen to these stories while multi-tasking, like doing the laundry or commuting to work.  Some of us find it hard to justify sitting down and reading these books but could live with ourselves if we were listening to them in the background.

Here are 4 biographies that we recommend and that I’ve listened to "in the background":

Enjoy!  Let me know what you think.

P.S.  Not all biographies have to be guilty pleasures, but the answer to that is for another post…

Audio Book Benefits for the ClassRoom

Some people would consider using audio books in the classroom as a form of cheating but the audio book benefits far outweigh any negatives.  Though some children may like reading more than others there are many of us who hated to read as kids.  A bad experience with reading as a child may put one off of becoming a lifelong reader which for some of us would be a great tragedy.  Reading not only is enjoyable but from a learning perspective is so critical.

Audio books have now made it possible for children to access material that they don’t like to read in a format that may be easier and more enjoyable for them.  Experts in the educational sector have agreed that audio books in the classrooms may help some students more than normal books, especially those students who are just beginning to read or those who have difficulty in reading.

Below are 8 specific audio book benefits for their use in teaching:

1. Using audio books to teach children in school gives them “variety”. Constantly listening to the same voice may cause boredom or occasional zoning out.  A different voice will spice things up so to speak.

2. There are specific audio books prepared with children in mind that are not only educational but are meant to be very entertaining. These types of audio books make learning much more fun than normal teaching.

3. The teachers can play the audio book for the children while doing something else.  Using audio books to teach kids in school can give the teachers more time to prepare for the next lesson.

4. For children with reading difficulties, they can slowly follow the readings from audio books until they feel comfortable reading it themselves.

5. Recorded books save money. Instead of buying dozens of books for a classroom, just one audio book can be played for all the students in the classroom.  There are certain audio book rental services on the Internet, such as BooksFree that allow teachers to rent as many audio books as possible at very low cost. This is much more cost effective than having to buy even a single audio book.

6. Spoken word books that tell interesting stories are very helpful in times when the children have become too tired to read and study.

7. Children don’t particularly like printed books as much as they do audio books. It feels much more comfortable for them to “listen” to an audio book than “read” a book.

8. Audio books also have children deal with the pronunciation of certain words that they would have difficulty with when merely reading them. By hearing the pronunciation and seeing it printed, they would better grasp it.

All in all, most children find it a great deal of fun listening to a lesson on audio, rather than having to read it. That is why children would prefer watching movies or shows, rather than reading.  Of course, I am not saying that listening to audio books should replace reading.  They should be used to help foster not only the skill of reading but the love of reading as well.

More schools continue to embrace audio books as a teaching tool.  As less expensive options like renting have become available the audio book benefits for the classroom present a great case.
